Andhra Pradesh schools have reopened after the Makarsankranti holidays amid the COVID-19 surge. The school reopening decision of AP has made many parents worried. Parents across the state are now demanding an extension of holidays stating that attending offline classes amid the increasing number of novel coronavirus cases is dangerous for their ward.

Schools in Andhra Pradesh reopened on January 17, 2022, after almost a week of the Sankranthi holidays. Post the vacations, the schools have recorded low attendance as parents are worried over rising COVID-19 cases across the country. Moreover, with their wards not being fully vaccinated, it only adds to their side of the argument.

Talking about the delayed academic year and promotions during exams that took place due to the ongoing pandemics, Minister Suresh Kumar told the media, "Already 150 days of school have been completed in this academic year, and we intend to continue the remaining session in offline mode. Due to the Covid pandemic, we followed an 'all pass' approach in the last years but we understand the problems that the students will face in future if this continues."

Reports suggest that the state government has decided to continue with offline classes as 90% of the staff is vaccinated and many children in the eligible population have received the first dose.

However, after facing backlash from parents and low attendance, it is expected that the Andhra Pradesh government may reconsider its decision on school reopening.  However, there is no official confirmation on the same.

Meanwhile, various states across the country such as Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan, Telangana, Haryana, and more have ordered the closure of schools until further notice amid the rising cases of the novel coronavirus and Omicron scare.
