After Bihar Bridge Collapses, IIT Delhi to Train Engineers in AI-Driven Bridge Design & Monitoring
After high-profile bridge collapses shook public trust, Bihar Govt has reached out to IIT Delhi and AI-powered monitoring to rebuild confidence in its infrastructure.
In the wake of multiple bridge collapses in various parts of Bihar, that raised questions over construction quality and monitoring, the state government has joined hands with IIT Delhi to launch a first-of-its-kind certification programme in AI-powered bridge management and smart infrastructure design.
The six-month Advanced Certification in Smart Infrastructure Design and Monitoring, starting September 2025, will train over 100 state engineers in artificial intelligence (AI), drones, and sensor-based technologies to monitor structural health and prevent failures. The programme is part of the Bihar State Bridge Management & Maintenance Policy, 2025, recently cleared by the state Cabinet — India’s first state-level policy dedicated to systematic bridge upkeep.
A Series of Bridge Collapses
Bihar has witnessed several high-profile bridge collapses in recent years, most notably the repeated failure of the Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge in Khagaria, which collapsed twice within two years before its completion. Similar mishaps in Begusarai, Bhagalpur, and Araria have intensified public scrutiny, with engineers and officials under pressure to ensure safety standards. Against this backdrop, the new IIT Delhi partnership is being seen as a corrective step towards technology-driven accountability and resilience.

As of now, IIT Delhi has released the placement data 2026 that is updated till Dec 2025. As per the report, a total of 1,275 offers including PPOs have been. More than 1,140 students have been placed during IIT Delhi placements 2026. The highest package 2026 has not been released yet.
Above 300 PPOs have been already made this year, which is 33% higher as compared with 2025. 35 international offers were made in 2026. Top recruiters such as Amazon, Accenture, Google, Goldman Sachs and American Express visited the campus.
A total of 1,200 offers were made and 1,150 students were placed during the Phase 1 of IIT Delhi placements 2025. Further, more than 50 international offers were made during IIT Delhi Phase 1 placements 2024-25.

What Engineers Will Learn
As per a release issued by IIT Delhi, under the IIT Delhi programme, engineers will use AI/ML algorithms to analyse drone and sensor data for Bridge Health Index (BHI) scores. Deploy strain gauges, tilt meters, and thermal imaging for real-time structural monitoring. Implement algorithm-driven Maintenance Priority Index (MPI) models for resource planning. Feed inspection data into a Bridge Information and Management System (BIMS) portal, which will be publicly accessible for transparency."
It further added that the policy mandates drone-based inspections of all state-maintained bridges, using high-resolution cameras, LiDAR, and thermal sensors to detect cracks, corrosion, and structural weaknesses before they lead to disasters.
Building In-House Capacity
In a significant move to reduce reliance on private consultants, the Bihar government will set up an in-house Bridge Design Cell under the Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited (BRPNNL). The cell is expected to save the state over ₹65 crore annually and cut project delays by handling the design of culverts, retaining walls, and small to mid-sized bridges internally.
The state has also requested the Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE) to submit a training plan for government engineers in advanced road and bridge design.

IIT Delhi MSc fee structure is cumulative of various components, including tuition fees, hostel fees, student welfare fund, alumni fees, training and placement charges, etc. Candidates who get selected have to pay the required admission fees to confirm their candidature. IIT-Delhi MSc tuition fee range from INR 30,000 to INR 70,000. This fee amount is as per the official website/ sanctioning body. It is still subject to changes and hence, is indicative.
Deployment of trained engineers will begin with real-time monitoring of 85 critical bridges already audited by IIT Delhi and IIT Patna in 2025–26, expanding to 200 major structures by 2027. The policy also envisions the adoption of digital twin technologies for predictive maintenance and lifecycle management of bridges.
IIT Delhi will design course modules aligned with the latest IRC:SP:35-2024 standards and Dr V.K. Raina’s bridge maintenance manual, the key technical references in the new framework. “The future of infrastructure lies in technology and self-reliance,” said Bihar Public Works Minister Nitin Nabin. “By 2026, our goal is to carry out 100% of routine inspections internally and design all bridges under 250 metres without external support. This is a cornerstone of our mission for self-reliant, tech-driven public infrastructure governance,” the Minister added.
