The Banaras Hindu University’s (BHU) department of biochemistry at the Institute of Science has secured a Rs 1.7 crore grant from the Indian government through the department of science and technology under the ministry of science and technology.

According to a statement from BHU, the grant received will be used for developing the science and technology infrastructure at BHU. This will strengthen the research and development activities and scientific social responsibility (SSR) activities, thereby helping various start-ups, manufacturing industries and MSMEs to meet the objective of Atmanirbhar Bharat, it said.

According to S Srikrishna, the head of the department of biochemistry at BHU, the grant from the government will be used to boost research, innovation and entrepreneurial activities related to biochemistry, and to develop the central instrumentation facility (CIF) at BHU. Students who are pursuing postgraduate and research at BHU will be able to access the facilities at CIF all the time. This will promote an inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary research ecosystem, claims BHU.

“Department of biochemistry, BHU, is the only department of any university in the entire state of Uttar Pradesh to receive this grant,” said the statement. BHU has recently allowed faculties to choose whether to conduct the semester-end examinations in online mode or offline mode. According to BHU, faculties can also allow students to choose the mode of exam.
