Delhi University to reopen for students in phased manner from next week: VC
We will begin with libraries, and then laboratories. Then we will monitor and assess the situation and decide whether to open other things as well, the Delhi University VC said.
Delhi Univerisity (DU) will reopen its campus from next week in a phased manner for students beginning with libraries, and then laboratories, Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor P C Joshi said. Recently, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority has permitted the colleges in the national capital to reopen for the students.
Speaking at an Idea Exchange session of The Indian Express, P C Joshi said "the University will be opened for the students in a cautious and gradual manner as there are many students who are from outside Delhi. We will try to accommodate as many students as possible in our hostels while adhering to the COVID-19 protocols. We will begin with libraries, and then laboratories. Then we will monitor and assess the situation and decide whether to open other things as well.”
However, it will be voluntary for students to physically attend and teaching-learning will continue in a hybrid of online and offline classes. While all theory classes will be conducted online, practicals will be offline, and students would have the option of attending practicals physically with access to videos of sessions, he added.
While speaking on the DU College reopening, Dean of Social Welfare (DU) Rajeev Gupta, told the Hindu: “We are currently working on the modalities after holding a meeting with principals and heads of departments. Hopefully from next week, we will be able to reopen the campus in a phased manner. Third-year students will get first preference.”
As per the reports, the colleges will be reopened initially for third-year students in science streams and those who require laboratories for practicals.
Earlier, Delhi University had planned to reopen the college and conduct physical classes for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Science courses from August 16. However, later the order to resume offline classes was deferred. Though the physical classes were deferred by Delhi University, the teaching and non-teaching staff of DU colleges and other centres were asked to report to work, as mentioned in the order issued on August 5.
Meanwhile.,All India Students Association (AISA) has also demanded the Delhi University authorities to consider reopening the University for physical classes. Students also took to social media demanding the reopening of the offline classes. DUSU office-bearers have also demanded for increasing number of undergraduate seats in colleges by 10 percent.
