Former Governor of Assam Jagdish Mukhi narrated the memoirs of emergency during the Centenary Year Meet.

DU's former faculty members remember old days in Centenary Year Meet

The “Centenary Year Meet of the Former Faculty of University of Delhi” program was organized on late Thursday evening. Former Governor of Assam and former professor of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, University of Delhi, Jagdish Mukhi was present as the chief guest on this occasion. 

The function was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi, Prof. Yogesh Singh. Prof. Jagdish Mukhi recounted many anecdotes from his life related to the University and narrated his memoirs related to Emergency.

Prof. Jagdish Mukhi said that the University of Delhi has made a special identity in its 100 years since inception. He said that this University is the first choice of the people of the whole country. On this occasion, he thanked and also congratulated the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Yogesh Singh for organizing this program for the former teachers of the University. Recalling the memoirs of his student life, Mukhi told that after his graduation from B. Com. in 1965, he had the option of choosing IIM Ahmedabad for his higher studies, but he chose Delhi University's Shri Ram College of Commerce instead. 

He told that he had played a leading role in the University, from student politics to teacher organization and movements. He told that when Emergency was imposed in the country in 1975, many teachers of the University were also put in jail. Prof. Mukhi, on emphasising the importance of teacher-student relationship and respect, narrated an incident when an SDM had taken the bail of a teacher because he had been a teacher of the said SDM and knew him very well and was sure that his teacher can do no wrong. Prof. Mukhi further told that after that incident, in the next 10-15 days, the rest of the teachers also got bail, whereas before that no one was accepting their bail.

Presiding over the program, Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Yogesh Singh shared detailed information related to the establishment of the university. Referring to the glorious journey of 100 years of the University, the Vice-Chancellor thanked all the former teachers for their contribution in this. He said that due to the valuable contribution and hard work of all of them as stakeholders, the University of Delhi has a special identity in the country and the world today. 

He said that the University is proud of all you teachers and the entire university family expresses gratitude towards you. Sharing detailed information on the achievements of the centenary year, the Vice-Chancellor said that 2006 new teachers have been appointed and 5910 teachers have been promoted so far in this year. Apart from these, hundreds of new appointments and promotions have also taken place for non-teaching staff. He informed that the university is continuously expanding in education and infrastructural facilities. Giving information along with figures, he said that construction work worth Rs 330 crore is going on. Keeping in view the problem of hostel for girls, girls’ hostel is also going to be constructed on Dhaka land at a cost of INR 143 crore, he informed.

During the program, former Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi, Prof. PC Joshi, Prof. PS Grover, Prof. Ramesh Chandra, Prof. BP Singh and Ms. Marjoria Fernandes, among others, also shared their own memories related to DU. At the end of the program, a dinner was also organized in honour of the former teachers. On this occasion, the Director of South Delhi Campus, Prof. Shri Prakash Singh, Convener of Centenary Celebrations Committee, Prof. Neera Agnimitra, Registrar Dr. Vikas Gupta and others Deans, Heads of Departments, Directors, Principals, hundreds of former teachers and officers etc. were also present along with Prof. Anil Kumar of the University of Delhi Foundation.
