Hijab Row: Mangalore University impose total ban on headscarves on campus

Mangalore University syndicate has decided to impose a total ban on headscarves on the entire campus and within the classroom. However, the varsity decision has been highly criticized by both students and faculty members. The University syndicated has decided to amend the existing uniform rule and will be applicable to the six constituent colleges.

Earlier, the University college had allowed Muslim girls to cover their heads with uniform shawls. The rule was scrapped after a meeting of the syndicate on May 16. The six colleges were directed to implement the new rule from May 17.

While speaking to TOI, University College principal Anasuya Rai that they have directed the Muslim girls to abide by the syndicate decision. “Of the 44 Muslim students in our college, only 10 students are regularly attending the class. We have held several rounds of talks with them to return to the campus,” she said.

The Muslim girls said that the rule was restricted to PU and lower classes, and no degree or post-graduate studies. They argued that the rule cannot be implemented in the middle of an academic year which disturbs the status quo.

On Thursday, several students held a protest against Muslim girls wearing hijab on campus and not adhering to the new rule. The University vice-chancellor PS Yadapadithaya said an emergency meeting of University College management has been called on Friday to discuss the issue and arrive at a decision.

“The situation has been tense at the campus after the rule was introduced a week ago. Some Muslim students were sitting outside classrooms and others were absent. There was pressure from college union members to strictly implement the rule without any leniency,” one of the professors said.
