Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students staged a protest against Delhi's Jahagirpuri demolition drive. It must be noted that after the anti-encroachment drive began, the Supreme Court issued an order to stop the demolition campaign.
The protesting students also burnt effigies and also raised slogans against casteism. The protest took place on the day when the demolition drive was carried out at Delhi's Jahangirpur area. The BJP-led North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) began its anti-encroachment campaign in the Jahangirpuri's C Block on Wednesday afternoon.
As per the official statement, the civic body as reported by Times Now said that its officials removed temporary kiosks on the pavements and ramps with the help of seven JCB machines/bulldozers in the heavy police presence.
"About two kilometers of the road near Kushal cinema were cleared from encroachment. As many as 25 items were seized and 20 tonnes of garbage were lifted. The encroachment was removed by the licensing department, engineering department, enforcement cell and the health department of Civil Lines as a joint team," the civic body said in the statement.
The statement further reads, "Two encroachment drives were conducted in Jahangirpuri on February 2 and 17 and one on April 11 this year to remove illegal possession in the same area. Such anti-encroachment drives on public roads is done regularly in all wards by North DMC with/without notice under sections 321/322/323/325 of the MCD Act, 1957 with prior intimation to local police." The opposition has lashed out at the BJP over the demolition drive.
The demolition drive was been conducted in the same locality where communal violence erupted during a Hanuman Jayanti procession. On April 16, Jahangirpuri had witnessed violent clashes, including stone-pelting, arson and firing, between two communities.
