Mumbai University and its affiliated colleges decided not to increase their fees for the upcoming academic year. The reports on ‘No fee hike in Mumbai University’ came as a relief for students amid the ongoing deadly pandemic situation. In order to assist students amid these difficult times, MU stated that they will not be increasing the fees for the upcoming semester and students will also be allowed to pay their tuition fees in installments.

The University of Mumbai issued a notice to the administration of its affiliated colleges asking them to not increase the fees for the upcoming year of 2020-21. The official notice issued in this regard states, “Owing to the lockdown announced on March 23, all industries, commercial work as well as jobs in the private sector have been affected financially. This has also affected the financial situation of the general public. Keeping this in mind, we, hereby, direct all affiliated colleges to not hike their fees for the next year.”

Confirming the news of no fee hike on MU and students will be allowed to pay fees in instalments, Officiating registrar of the University of Mumbai, Vinod Patil said,“In line with the letter from the UGC and keeping in mind the lockdown, we are instructing colleges to not increase the fees for the next year and allowing students to pay tuition fees in instalments.”

The reports also suggest that the colleges were asked not to put pressure on students regarding fees payment.  Schools, universities and academic institutions are closed in the Country since March 25 due to the nationwide lockdown imposed by the government after the sudden outbreak of the novel coronavirus. While the whole Country is struggling against the increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases, Maharashtra is the worst-hit state of the Country with nearly 1,47,741 positive coronavirus cases.

Considering the ongoing pandemic situation, the Maharashtra government decided to cancel all final-year University exams in the state. Meanwhile, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) also cancelled the pending CBSE 10th exams and made the CBSE 12th Board Exams optional. CBSE said that it will conduct CBSE 12th exams as and when the normalcy is restored. Following CBSE’s footsteps, ICSE 2020 and ISC 2020 board Exams also stand cancelled all over India.
