Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be the Chief Guest of the Anna University 42nd convocation that will be held on July 29.
Anna University has announced that it will be holding its 42nd convocation on July 29 at the college of Engineering where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the Chief Guest. It must be noted that this is the second time when a Prime Minister attended a convocation of the institution.
On October 9, 1952, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru delivered the first convocation address at the Madras Institute of Technology, which was at that time an independent educational institution. MIT which was formed in 1948 was later merged with Anna University which was formed in 1978. The varsity at present admits over 1 lakh students annually, including its affiliated colleges.
Nehru, the then Prime Minister had dwelt on the need to depend on indigenously created machinery and called for training so that students could go to rural areas to work there. He had called upon the institution to be self-reliant and the students to build their own equipment using indigenously available materials.
Back then, institute vice-president Kasturi Srinivasan, a host of State Ministers and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who later became the President of India, attended the convocation, according to the University official.
Anna University is one of the best institutes in Tamil Nadu. In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2022 that was announced by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan the varsity has secured 22nd rank in the Overall category. And in the Universities category, it had secured 20th rank. In the Research category, the University has been featured on the 21th spot and 17th in the Engineering spot. In the Management category, it featured in the 49th spot and 29th spot in the Architecture category.
