Supreme Court has today dismissed the petition filed by a group of students who have challenged the Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) decision to conduct the offline examination. Refusing any intervention, the three-judge bench constituting Justice Khanwilkar, Justice Indu Malhotra and Justice Ajay Rastogi issued orders for the same.
A plea was filed after Dr. Abdul Kalam Technical University, AKTU Lucknow shared its decision to conduct offline semester-end exams. A group of students challenged the decision in the apex court, arguing various facets of offline examination.
The Petition drafted by Advocates Krishna Kumar and Nandani Gupta on behalf of the petitioners had argued that the decision to conduct offline examination was not conducive in present circumstances. The plea further pointed out that as many as 4 lakh students would be appearing for the examination. These students, it pointed out, have been attending online classes from different corners of the country.
Conducting offline exams, it contested, would force students to travel and thus increase the risk of the COVID-19 infection spreading. Petitioners also pointed out that top universities like Delhi University as well as IITs and NITs are conducting online classes.
The Supreme Court bench, however, was not convinced. When Advocate Vipin Gupta submitted the arguments the bench remarked, “Their future education and employment will also be online then!”. When the Counsel responded that the examinations are offline the bench pointed out that it was sarcasm.
