A professor at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a foreign student at his home. He allegedly assaulted her after giving her a spiked drink.
The student has filed a police complaint along with three faculty members of UoH after which the accused professor was booked for assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty. He was also suspended by the university administration following a protest by students.
Deputy commissioner of police, Madhapur, K Shilpavalli said "the foreign student approached Gachibowli police with a complaint on Friday evening. She alleged that the professor took her to his house on the pretext of giving her a book. There, he offered her juice. After drinking the juice, she felt uneasy leading to the accused making sexual advances," the DCP said, as reported by TOI.
The student informed the police that she felt the juice was spiked. She resisted the professor when he tried to kiss her and molest her. To save herself, she sent a WhatsApp message to a professor in her home country. The professor called her up, made her give the phone to the accused and warned him of legal action. The accused got scared and dropped the survivor near her hostel on campus.
“At the health centre, the university staff again took help of the professor back home to translate what she was saying about the sexual assault. Finally, three UoH faculty members co-signed the complaint and approached us,” a Gachibowli police officer said.
After recording the survivor’s statement, the police arrested the accused.
