UPES Student Wields Technology to Design Interactive Plants
February 24, 2020: Prateek Vishwakarma, a student of MDesign specialising in Industrial Designing at UPES - University of Petroleum and Energy Studies recently developed a project Trixie, a technology that aims to build a relatively new kind of interaction with plants.
Talking about the motivation behind the invention, he says, “As a child, I remember paying a visit to my uncle’s house during vacations and spending time in nature. My uncle was immensely fond of plants and liked to keep various varieties in his farm. Any time I met him, I would watch how he managed his lovely garden. He will still search for fresh roots, seeds, and buds. Gradually, I have developed an interest in plants. My uncle showed me how to cultivate a plant from seed, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
The project that uses Tangible User Interface (TUI) is a clear example of how we can easily use technology to help us communicate with plants in unusual ways.
The idea was inspired by ‘Botanicus Interacticus’, the work of Ivan Poupyrev and his team at Disney Research. The view of the world where digital technologies are not created but are living, growing species inspired students to collaborate in this domain towards a healthy, biological future where expressions are not limited to humans and animals but are applied to plants as well.
The plant ‘Trixie’ can be used as an extension for functional uses in day-to-day lives with the incorporation of three basic features:
- Trixie responds by shaking whenever one greets it by calling out ‘Hi Trixie’.
- Trixie monitors the real-time moisture content of the soil and gives reminders to pour water by blinking LED lights whenever the moisture level of the soil drops below a certain specified level.
- By simply touching Trixie, one can turn on the LED lamp and Trixie will turn itself into a lamp.
