The central university has mentioned in its petition that security has been breached on campus by the student's agitation that had started on August 28.

Visva Bharati University has filed a petition at the Calcutta High Court seeking its intervention to clear the impasse that has been created by agitation against the expulsion of three varsity students on disciplinary grounds. The petition is likely to be heard later by this week.

Visva Bharati did not make any official statement. Lawyers aware of the development told Hindustan Times that the state’s only central university has mentioned in its petition that security has been breached on campus by the student's agitation that had started on August 28. Vice-chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty has been confined in his residence on-campus from that time. Members of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the students’ wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), have blocked the gates.

As per reports, the agitators have been sending food items and vegetables to the VC house, however, he refused to accept it. On August 30, the VC lodged a police complaint after which four constables and a sub-inspector were deployed outside his home.

“The VC made a false accusation before some staff members that we are not allowing him to buy food. We have been supplying food thrice a day so that he does not face any inconvenience,” Rupa Chakraborty, one of the agitating students told HT.

Aishe Ghosh, the student union president at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University led the agitation on Tuesday. The students’ wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) will start a parallel movement on Thursday.

Three of the students who were suspended in January last year took part in agitations against several actions that were taken by Chakrabarty and visits by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders such as Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta in 2020 and Union home minister Amit Shah before the March-April assembly polls.
