Decision on Maharashtra school reopening likely tomorrow

In December, the Maharashtra government announced the reopening of schools after witnessing a decline in the number of novel coronavirus cases. While Mumbai schools reopened from December 15, 2021, many private schools decided to defer reopening due to Omicron. 

Issues on Maharashtra school reopening and closing are continuously prevailing since the state started reporting a surge in the number of COVID-19 and Omicron cases. As of now, the state has shut schools until January 31, 2022. However, it is likely that the Maharashtra government will take a decision on school reopening by tomorrow, i.e. January 20, 2022. 

Various reports suggest that for now, Maharashtra schools would continue to remain closed until January 31, 2022, and a decision on reopening would only be considered after that. However, the government is facing a lot of pressure from many and it is likely that it will take a call on reopening soon.

Since the state has announced closure, Maharashtra School reopening has been demanded by many groups. Referring to students facing immense academic loss since the last 1.5 years of the pandemic, various groups of parents, as well as many students too, were not keen on schools closure. 

However, the decision of closure has divided the groups, there are some that are demanding reopening schools whereas there are many who fear that reopening of schools would impose health risks on students as children are not fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, various parents have also been writing an open letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray demanding the reopening of Maharashtra schools, especially those in Mumbai. Their concerns stem from the fact that since most of the city is open following precautionary against COVID-19, why can't a similar approach be followed for schools.
