23,000 aspirants want GATE to be postponed amid COVID scare

More than 23,000 candidates who are appearing for the GATE exam in February have joined a petition demanding the exam be postponed in view of the third wave of COVID-19.ย ย
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2022ย will be conductedย by IITย Kahargpurย onย February 5, 6, 12 and 13.ย GATEย is an online national levelย examination conducted for Master of Engineering (ME), Masters in Technology (MTech) and direct PhD admissions to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)ย and other institutes/universities across India. The exam is jointly conducted by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkeeย and Indian Institute for Science, Bangalore (IISC Bangalore), on a rotational basis on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB - GATE), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource & Development (MHRD), Government of India.ย ย
โWith the current third wave, COVID-19 due to its new variant Omicron has spread severely in several states, cities. Several studies, including one done by IIT Kanpur, predict that the peak of theย third wave is expected in early February and the wave will end by April. Therefore, the peak is most likely to coincide with the usual exam dates of GATE,โ the petition read.ย
The petition further read, โIf the exam dates are not postponed, the candidates appearing for GATE 2022 run an imminent risk of getting infected and spreading it thereby getting threat to their life as well as their family memberโs lives,โ it added.ย ย
GATE 2022 resultย will be released onย March 17, 2021, online on the official website. Candidates who appeared in the exam can check their results by logging into the portal. Only the aspirants who qualify for the GATE will only be allowed to access the scorecard which will remain valid for three years from the date of declaration of result.ย
