Allahabad University executive council opposes its renaming

Allahabad University's executive council has decided not to change the name of the Centre-run varsity after the district has been renamed to Prayagraj, officials said.
The Allahabad University spokesperson said due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown in the country the executive council could not meet. However, the opinion regarding changing the name of the varsity was sought from them through email.
"Three members did not respond, while the remaining 12 responded in the negative and a resolution has been passed against changing the name," said Shailendra Mishra.
"The members wanted the name retained," he added.
In 2018, the Uttar Pradesh government had renamed the Allahabad district to Prayagraj, which was later approved by the Centre.
The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and the university, founded in 1887, then corresponded over the suggestion to rename the institution as well, officials said.
On May 6, MHRD had written a letter to the Allahabad University and asked them to give the decision by the executive council on the issue by Monday, May 11. The renaming of the fourth oldest university in the country saw opposition from both current and former students of the university.
A former student also wrote a letter to President Ram Nath Kovind and sought his intervention.
Some students also launched an online petition against the renaming of the university, which has gathered the support of over 4,000 people up to Monday. Several teachers and local residents also took to social media to register their protest.
