Coronavirus: IIT-Bombay partners with OF Medak to make ventilators

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has teamed up with Ordnance Factory Medak, Hyderabad to develop ventilators. OF Medak makes armoured vehicles and rocket launchers. It has also sent its own special team to help the local health authorities in reinstating vital medical instruments, including ventilators. According to an official, the expert team from the Ordnance Factory Medak had extended a helping hand in fixing not only ventilators but also other vital instruments needed by the health workers in the local hospitals. There are more than 300 ventilators which were not operational and are being restored.

He stated that a team of officers from within OF Medak had partnered with a team of alumni IIT-B which is working on a separate design for ventilators. The two teams are working out on a design for ventilator and it is expected to be completed soon. The OFB has informed all its factories to make timely deliveries of all vital medical requirements and to safeguard the quality and specifications.

OF Medak has the latest state-of-art facilities and is one of the 40 factories under OFB. It consists of Steel Casting. Moreover, it consists of Aluminium Foundry which has CNC oriented Light Machining, Heavy Machining and Assembly lines. The factory has been creating bulletproof vehicles and will soon begin the manufacturing of hulls and turrets for a number of military platforms including the Main Battle Tank (Arjun) and Armour Amphibious Dozar, Rocket Launchers (Pinaka) etc. The factory consists of its own in-house R&D facility and its own CAM centre.
