The International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIITH) celebrated its 27th Foundation Day. The event was graced by Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary for Information Technology, Telangana, as the chief guest. He explored a showcase of IIITH’s groundbreaking projects that have had a significant societal impact. These projects included AI for oral cancer detection, the iRASTE road safety initiative, computational drug discovery, geospatial solutions for nature conservation - ranging from lakes to tigers - earthquake and drone-based building safety assessments, brain mapping, shape-shifting drones, ornithopters, language technologies, LipSync and language translation tools, as well as smart city research and implementations.

Speaking on the occasion, Jayesh Ranjan,  Special Chief Secretary for Information Technology, Telangana, said, “We are happy that IIITH ranks highly on many parameters, and is considered to be among the best engineering institutes in the country in various fields especially AI. The Telangana government is proud that IIITH exists in Hyderabad. Interestingly the iRaste road safety project, a collaboration between the Telangana Government, IIIT Hyderabad and Intel was recently presented to Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi who greatly appreciated it and wants to see it implemented across the country”.

IIIT Hyderabad Alumni Awards 2024

This year's Foundation Day also featured the presentation of the inaugural alumni awards. The Alumni Outstanding Service Award for 2024, the highest honour IIITH bestows on its alumni, was awarded to Soujanya Lanka (B.Tech CSE - 1998, PhD - 2003) and Vipul Kedia (B.Tech CSE (Hons) - 1999). The institute also honoured the winners of the Outstanding Service Award for both 2024 and 2023 during the event.

The institute has expanded to include 29 research centres, a Technology Innovation Hub for AI Data Banks, Data Services, and Data Analytics (TIH-Data), and an Applied Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (INAI) in collaboration with Intel. Established in 2015 with funding from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), IIITH’s Kohli Centre on Intelligent Systems remains a leading hub for research on intelligent systems, bringing together some of India's brightest minds to translate research from the lab to real-world applications for sustainable social impact. IIITH’s alumni network, now nearly 6,000 strong, is making significant contributions across various institutions, roles, and regions worldwide.

Q:   Which technical events happen at IIIT, Bhubaneswar?
A:

Encoded, a hackathon event by ACM IIIT-BH chapter in association with Tech Society as a part of Advaita. Workshop on Blockchain by Tech society of IIIT in association with IEEE Student section. Workshop session on python programming. Introduction session on Cyber Security and Network Programming. Session on IOT and Android Software development. Workshop Session on Quantum Computing using Python. 

The Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CIE) at IIIT Hyderabad Foundation marked 15 years of fostering innovation this year. CIE has incubated over 300 startups, creating employment opportunities for more than 2,000 young people. With 80 incubated companies and around 350 employees working within them, CIE remains one of the largest academic incubators in the country. It is further strengthened by the presence of an Atal Innovation Centre and a BIRAC BioNEST incubator.

Prof P J Narayanan, the Director of IIIT Hyderabad, said, "Today marked the grand finale of the institute's extended Silver Jubilee celebrations that began on September 2nd, 2022. These events have fostered a strong bond with our alumni community. The institute also introduced the Alumni Awards to honour graduates who have excelled in their professional careers or contributed significantly to society or the institute. The inaugural awardees were celebrated today. It is deeply gratifying to witness the accomplishments of our alumni. We look forward to accelerating this progress in the coming years, in collaboration with the Government of Telangana, NGOs, and industry partners."
