Mumbai University to have first women’s engineering college at Thane
Mumbai University is going to set up the first of its kind women’s engineering college at Thane from the academic session commencing in 2014. The college will be called the New Horizon Institute of Technology and Management and has already received approval from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and is currently awaiting approval from the state government. This all women’s engineering college is expected to offer 300 seats for admission in its first academic session. Sources reveal that the college is being established so that aspirants living in central suburbs can benefit from it. Mumbai University at present has 65 engineering colleges affiliated to it.
Already having three CBSE schools in Thane as well as Navi Mumbai in its ambit, The New Horizon Education Society, has recently been given approval to conduct engineering courses in disciplines such as civil, computer, mechanical, electrical and electronics. The college will also be offering a new course on mechatronics, which is basically a blend of five engineering streams – mechanical, electronics, control, telecommunication and computers.
The college has been given approval for admitting students to fill 60 seats in each of the course. The institute is expected to offer management courses also at its premises.
AICTE officials were quoted as saying that this new all women’s engineering college will be a boon to women students residing in Thane and neighbouring areas. Currently there are very few all women’s engineering colleges in the state of Mahashtra, some of which are - Savitribai Phule College at Aurangabad, SNDT University, Cummins College at Pune as well as GH Raisoni Institute at Nagpur.
