NIT Silchar suspends 5 Bangladeshi students over Violence on campus, Possession of Narcotics
On September 8, clash occurred between group of students on the campus, when a group of Bangladeshi third-year students allegedly attacked other students.
The National Institute of Technology, Silchar in Assam has suspended five Bangladeshi students who have been found to be guilty of alleged involvement in violent clashes on the campus. These students will be deported back.
The five Bangladeshi students are enrolled in NIT Silchar under Indian Council for Cultural Relations scholarships, were also found in possession of narcotic substances during a search of their rooms, said NIT Silchar Director, Dilip Kumar Baidya.
The Director added that all five students will be sent back to Bangladesh.
"We have enough evidence to establish that they were actively involved in campus violence and have been suspended for two semesters," the director said, as reported by Hindustan Times.
On September 8, clash occurred between group of students on the campus, when a group of Bangladeshi third-year students allegedly attacked their nationals.
The Director informed that the institute conducted investigation into the matter thoroughly and decided to suspend the five students for an academic year. They have also been expelled from the hostel as part of the punishment.
Dean of Studentsโ Welfare S S Dhar said that primarily, the action was for campus violence, but the suspected use of narcotics were also recovered from their rooms which was also considered.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the five students went on a rampage, allegedly under the influence of drugs, and attacked others on the night of September 8. Following which several injured students were rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
