Now, TN students can earn honours degree in engg by clearing extra courses
As per the 2021 regulations of Anna University, a student needs to secure a minimum 160 credits to get a BE or BTech degree and if he earns 18 extra credits, he will earn honours degree and that too in four years.
The students who have enrolled in various engineering courses in Tamil Nadu have a reason to cheer as they will now be able to get an honours degree in four years by passing six extra courses or 18 credits. As per a report published in Times of India, the engineering students can also earn minor degrees in other branches by getting credits in them. The decision was taken in a recent academic council meeting of Anna University.
“If students get high grades till fourth semester in BE, BTech programmes, they will be allowed to select specialised courses in ME or MTech degree programmes. If they clear six specialised courses in a related field or get 18 extra credits, they will be awarded with honours degree, said Anna University vice-chancellor R Velraj.
He said for instance, if a mechanical engineering student or civil engineering student completes six courses in artificial intelligence or machine learning, he or she will get a BE mechanical engineering with a minor in artificial intelligence or machine learning. The university is also mulling to implement it for the second-year students after making necessary changes in the regulations, the report said.

Colleges hail move
Meanwhile, colleges welcomed the move saying it would increase placement opportunities. A college principal told ToI that companies are expecting interdisciplinary skills among students with the emergence of newer technologies such as IoT.
