NTA Omits 75% Eligibility Criteria Rule from JEE Main 2027 Brochure: What It Means for Students
Breaking! NTA has not mentioned the 75% eligibility criteria rule this year in the official brochure this year. The top 20 percentile rule for admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other participating Government Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs) has also been omitted. However, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has mentioned this admission requirement in previous years' information brochures.
The JEE Main 2027 brochure has also not specified the subject combinations required for admission to BE/BTech, BArch and BPlan programmes at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. These details are important for candidates planning to appear for the examination and seek admission through the JEE Main admission process. Instead, this year the brochure mentions: "For all seat allocation-related procedures/queries, the candidates are advised to refer to the websites of Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) and Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) after the declaration of result/ranks of JEE (Main) - 2027."
The omission has raised questions about the eligibility criteria for admission to these institutes for the 2027 academic session. However, students should not interpret the absence of the rule from the brochure as confirmation that the 75% criteria has been removed this year. No official notice confirming the removal of this requirement has been published.

What Is the 75% Criteria for NIT, IIIT and GFTI Admission?
Under the admission eligibility rules followed in previous years, candidates seeking admission to NITs, IIITs and other participating GFTIs through JoSAA counselling are generally required to meet one of the following conditions:
- 75% marks in Class 12: Candidates belonging to the General, OBC-NCL and EWS categories were required to secure at least 75% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination (Class 12 or equivalent).
- 65% marks in Class 12: Candidates belonging to the SC and ST categories were required to secure at least 65% aggregate marks (Class 12 or equivalent).
- Top 20 percentile: Candidates could also qualify by securing marks within the top 20 percentile of their respective Class 12 board examinations, subject to the applicable admission rules (Class 12 or equivalent).
These requirements relate to admission to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs and are separate from the eligibility criteria for appearing in JEE Main. Candidates who qualify for JEE Main are not automatically eligible for admission to these institutes, as they must also satisfy the applicable admission requirements.
JEE Main 2027 Brochure Does Not Mention Subject Combinations
Another important detail missing from the JEE Main 2027 information brochure is the subject combination required for admission to different undergraduate programmes.
In previous admission cycles, specific subject requirements applied to candidates seeking admission to BE/BTech, BArch and BPlan courses. Check below:
- For paper 1 (BE/BTech) - Passed the qualifying examination with Physics, Mathematics, a language, one from the Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Technical Vocational subjects, and any subject other than the above four.
- For paper 2a (BArch) - Passed the qualifying examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and two more subjects other than the above three
- For paper 2b (BPlan) - Passed the qualifying examination with Mathematics and four other subjects
The absence of these details from the 2027 brochure has left candidates without clarity on the subject requirements applicable to admission for the upcoming academic session.
Does the Omission Mean the 75% Criteria Has Been Removed?
No. The omission of the 75% marks criteria and top 20 percentile rule from the JEE Main 2027 brochure should not be treated as confirmation that the requirements have been removed.
NTA has not published an official notice confirming that the admission eligibility rules for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs have changed for 2027. Until an official clarification is issued by the competent authority, candidates should avoid making assumptions about the applicability of these conditions.
The omission is nevertheless significant because the information brochure is an important document for candidates preparing for the examination and planning their college admissions.
What Should JEE Main 2027 Aspirants Do Now?
Candidates should continue preparing for JEE Main 2027 and keep track of official announcements regarding admission eligibility. Students who may not meet the 75% marks requirement in Class 12 should not assume that they will automatically become eligible for NIT, IIIT or GFTI admission this year.
The omission of the 75% criteria, top 20 percentile rule and programme-specific subject combinations has created uncertainty around the admission requirements for the 2027 academic session. However, the absence of these details does not establish that the existing 75% rule has been discontinued. It raises questions about whether the admission conditions will remain unchanged or whether an official clarification will follow.
