Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have recorded the highest number of applicants in the country for 2016. However, according to some reports, the number of applicants from Maharashtra has gone down as compared to last year.
Vinod Tawde, who was the State higher and technical education minister for JEE Main till last year, has reportedly withdrawn himself from the test in 2016. It is believed that the state’s decision to start its own entrance test (MHT-CET) for engineering is the main reason behind the drop in number of applications in JEE entrance.

Some experts also believe that students these days have more options when it comes to choosing a profession and so they tend to lose interest in courses like engineering. “Students are moving towards more fancy courses such as design, law, hotel management, maritime,” said an official.
While some officials think it’s the state’s CET affecting the number of registrations for JEE Main 2016, many believes that the changes made in Central test pattern would have discouraged students from applying for the exam. Currently, both JEE rank and school board marks are used for admissions to top engineering institutes.
