Reduce exam timing, introduce MCQ option: UGC to colleges, Universities
The University Grants Commission has asked universities and colleges in the country to conduct examination by adopting any of the two marking systems proposed by the commission.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed all universities and colleges across the country to follow any one of the two marking systems for the students. The first is to mark students based on the internal assessment or reduce the exam duration from three to two hours.
The universities are considering conducting the exam in the online mode given the coronavirus situation in the country and ongoing lockdown because of it.
As per the reports, many of the universities have shown their aversion towards declaring the results based on the internal assessment marks of the students. Venugopal KR, Vice-Chancellor, Bangalore University has expressed his concerns that if the results are announced based on the internal assessment then it will be unfair to the students as it is impossible to judge the potential of the students on the basis of their previous performances. If the situation gets back to normal, the university will hold the exam in normal mode by increasing the number of examination centres across the city and conducting examination in smaller batches of students in a particular shift. He also said that if it is required the university will also inclde Multiple Choice Questions for easy conduct and evaluation.
Other universities in the country such as the Central University of Gujarat will tentatively conduct the semester examinations for the students in July 2020. The university states that it has begun conducting the practical sessions for the science stream students with stimulated online experiments and will also resort to similar methods for conducting the examinations if need be.
