Gauhati University reschedules offline exams amid COVID surge
The University in its official notification announced that all exams that were scheduled on January 21, 22 and 24, 2022, have been rescheduled and the new dates for the examinations will be notified shortly.
In wake of rise in COVID cases and its variant Omicron, the Gauhati University authorities have rescheduled the Postgraduate and Integrated MCom odd semester exams that were scheduled from today; i.e January 21, 2022. The University in its official notification announced that all exams that were scheduled on January 21, 22 and 24, 2022, have been rescheduled and the new dates for the examinations will be notified shortly.
“Other examinations scheduled from January 27 will be held as per schedule. The practical examination, too, will be held as per schedule,” the notice read.
As per the sources, many students have returned to the hostels after celebrating Bihu. “We are not aware whether COVID is the reason for rescheduling the exams, but the fact that a majority of the boarders are yet to return to the hostels could be a reason why the exams on the first three days had to be deferred,” the official said.
Earlier, NSUI Assam had demanded “immediate closure of all the educational institutions across the state”. Besides, it suggested that the examinations should be held in blended mode (online/offline both). Gauhati University was also closed for five days as a precautionary measure earlier after 21 students had tested positive for COVID-19 in December.
Meanwhile, the positivity rate continues to push the 13 per cent mark with 7,929 new COVID-19 cases reported in Assam on Thursday evening. Kamrup (Metro) district reported 1,716 COVID-19 cases. As many as 12 deaths were reported in the state on Thursday.
