The Hijab Row has again resurfaced in Karnataka after a group of Hindu students from Mangaluru University protested on campus stating that the Muslim students are still coming to class wearing hijabs. They also demanded that they should remove their hijabs before attending the class.

Earlier in January 2022, the hijab row erupted in Udupi, and had hit the headlines for several months. The Hindu students in Mangaluru have claimed that around 40 Muslim students are attending classes while wearing hijabs.

Several Hindu students left the class and sat on the campus grounds in protest. They also said that they will not discontinue their protest until the Muslim students remove their hijabs or are sent out. They also said that they will not attend classes until the matter is resolved.

Meanwhile, the college has not released any official statement on the issue. At present, 40-50 Hindu students are sitting on campus in protest against students who wore hijab to class. They demanded that these students must remove their hijabs and should follow the court’s order regarding the same. They also demanded that the College Development Committee (CDC) should call a meeting immediately and tell the students once and for all that hijabs won’t be allowed inside the campus.

On March 15, the Karnataka High Court bench of Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, and Justices JM Khazi and Krishna Dixit, had ruled that wearing a hijab was not an essential part of Islam.
The bench said, “We are of the considered opinion that the wearing of the hijab by Muslim women does not form a part of the essential religious practice in the Islamic faith. The government has the power to issue an order banning clothes that could disturb the peace, harmony and public order and no case is made for its invalidation.”
