The University of Delhi in a recent meeting of the EC discussed naming two upcoming colleges after Savarkar and Sushma Swaraj.

The decision to name two new colleges of Delhi University after Veer Savarkar Sushma Swaraj has not gone down well with a section of the student and teaching community. Left supported students associations have decided to resist the decision of Delhi University to name colleges after VD Savarkar.

Delhi University in an executive meeting recently discussed naming the upcoming colleges after Savarkar. As per the Students Federation of India (SFI), this move is an attempt to distort history. β€œThe contribution of Savarkar has been of sabotaging the Independence movement of India,” it said in a statement.

On October 29, DU executive council was informed that the two names finalised for naming two upcoming colleges were Veer Savarkar and Sushma Swaraj. Earlier, during an EC meeting held in August, a proposal was passed through which the DU vice-chancellor was given authority to select names for the two upcoming colleges from a pool of names.

SFI, opposing the move has stated that Savarkar, who not only wrote mercy petitions on multiple occasions and expressed his wish to the British by giving an undertaking that he shall refrain from participating in any struggle for freedom but also actively collaborated with the Britishers, deserves no glorification.

As per a statement issued by SFIDU, it strongly opposes this proposal of naming the colleges after Savarkar.

Delhi University has allotted two parcels of land at Najafgarh and Fatehpur Beri for the establishment of the two new colleges.
