Dr Vineet Joshi, Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), effective immediately. This assignment will continue until further orders, according to the Ministry of Education.

A 1992-batch IAS officer, Dr Joshi brings extensive administrative expertise to this role. An alumnus of IIT Kanpur and the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), he has held significant positions, including Chief Secretary of Manipur, Chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), and Resident Commissioner of Manipur. His experience across central ministries underscores his capability to manage complex educational frameworks.

The UGC, tasked with overseeing standards and funding in higher education, is pivotal to India’s academic ecosystem. Dr Joshi’s additional charge comes at a crucial juncture, with the UGC implementing reforms under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, focusing on multidisciplinary education, research innovation, and institutional autonomy.

As per a tweet shared by UGC, β€œDr Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, has been entrusted with the additional charge of Chairman, UGC, until further orders. Dr Joshi, a 1992-batch IAS officer, has previously served as Chief Secretary of Manipur, Chairman of CBSE, and Resident Commissioner of Manipur. An alumnus of IIT Kanpur and IIFT, he has held many key roles in various central ministries.”

Stakeholders in the education sector have welcomed Dr Joshi’s appointment, citing his proven leadership in CBSE and higher education policy. His dual responsibilities as Secretary and acting UGC Chairman are expected to enhance coordination between the Ministry and the UGC, facilitating smoother policy execution.
