UGC Issues Advisory for Anti-Ragging Day 2025; Colleges to Observe Awareness Week from August 12–18

The UGC has also urged educational institutions to run social media campaigns and post video messages from heads of institutions to amplify the anti-ragging message.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a fresh advisory directing all higher educational institutions (HEIs) across India to observe Anti-Ragging Day on August 12, followed by a week-long series of awareness activities from August 12 to 18, 2025, to curb ragging in campuses. This initiative, launched in 2023, is part of the UGC’s proactive measures to eliminate ragging and foster a safe and inclusive academic environment in colleges and universities.
According to the advisory issued by UGC Secretary Prof. Manish R. Joshi, all institutions are mandated to comply with the regulations for curbing ragging in letter and spirit. The advisory reiterates that ragging is a punishable offence, and institutions must strictly implement monitoring mechanisms and awareness programmes as outlined in UGC’s anti-ragging regulations. The Commission has also provided short films and awareness videos on its official website to be used for sensitisation campaigns in campuses.
As part of the Anti-Ragging Week 2025 celebrations, colleges and universities are encouraged to conduct a wide range of student engagement activities. These include slogan writing, poster making, essay competitions, logo designing, debates, street plays, photography contests, and quizzes focusing on anti-ragging themes. Institutions are advised to distribute prizes and certificates to motivate students to actively promote anti-ragging messages.
The UGC has also urged educational institutions to run social media campaigns and post video messages from heads of institutions to amplify the anti-ragging message. Activities such as seminars, workshops, interactive sessions, and creative setups like campus selfie corners have been suggested to make the campaign more impactful. Students are also encouraged to participate in the National Contest 2025 for digital posters, short videos, and reels, for which full details are available on the official Anti-Ragging portal.
To ensure accountability and wider participation, institutions are instructed to submit an Action Taken Report on the Anti-Ragging website after the week-long celebration. The advisory also requests universities to forward the circular to all affiliated colleges under their jurisdiction for effective implementation.
With the commencement of a new academic year and a fresh batch of undergraduate and postgraduate students entering campuses, the UGC has intensified its anti-ragging efforts, highlighting that student safety and dignity remain a top priority. The advisory serves as a timely reminder as higher education institutions prepare to welcome new students and create a positive induction experience.
