Karnataka Hijab Row: Schools, Colleges reopens in Udupi, Section 144 in place
As per the order issued by Bangalore Police, any type of gathering, agitation or protest within a 200-metre area of the schools, PUCs, degree colleges or any other educational institution in Bangalore is barred till March 21, 2022.
Schools and Colleges in Udupi district reopened from today following the Karnataka Hijab Verdict by Karnataka High Court. Though the schools, colleges have been reopened, section 144 is still in place in the district which will place restrictions of processions, celebrations and protests until March 21, 2022.
On March 8, Section 144 and other prohibitory orders were extended in Bangalore as a precaution. As per the order issued by Bangalore Police, any type of gathering, agitation or protest within a 200-metre area of the schools, PUCs, degree colleges or any other educational institution in Bangalore is barred till March 21, 2022.
Schools, Colleges reopens in Udupi
The Deputy Commissioner of Udupi District informed news agency ANI . “Schools and colleges will be re-opened tomorrow in the Udupi district. Imposition of 144 sec will continue with restriction on processions, celebrations, protests will continue till 21st March,” stated the Deputy Commissioner.
Karnataka HC Verdict
Karnataka High Court has dismissed various petitions seeking permission to wear HIjab in education institutions. High Court rules that wearing a hijab is not an essential religious practice in Islam. It must be noted that a special bench was constituted to look into the issue.
The Karnataka High Court upheld the Hijab Ban after 11 days of hearing the issue. The HC upheld the ban on the grounds that "wearing the hijab is not an essential religious practice". Karnataka HC further added that the government can prescribe a uniform and that a uniform is a reasonable restriction on fundamental rights which the students cannot object to.
Soon, after the release of the final verdict on Hijab Ban, the state government released the set of dress code mandates which are to be followed in all of the schools, PUCs and colleges. The verdict was welcomed by the State’s CM BS Bommai and Education Minister BC Nagesh
