Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced that the Universities, colleges and other higher educational institutions in the state will reopen for final-year Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) students from October 4. The Chief Minister also said that the detailed instructions on the same will be released soon and are currently being worked out.

However, no decision on reopening the schools has been taken so far. As per the media reports, Kerala General Education minister V Sivankutty had earlier said that the state government will consider reopening the schools in a phased manner. The minister also emphasised that all students should get completely vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus and he said that vaccination of students depends on the approval of the central government and experts.

Kerala is presently dealing with a surge in COVID-19 cases daily along with the cases of the Nipah virus.

Several other states across the country have already reopened schools for some classes. Karnataka schools reopened for Classes 6 to 8 on September 6. The offline classes were conducted following all the standard operating procedures (SOP) and the COVID-19 guidelines.
