BITS Law School Launches Two Annual Awards Honouring Eunice De Souza's Legacy

The Gold Medal and Memorial Award at BITS Law School will recognise outstanding writing while celebrating the rich literary and academic legacy of Eunice De Souza.

BITS Law School, Mumbai, under the aegis of BITS Pilani, has announced two new awards to mark the 85th birth anniversary of renowned writer Eunice De Souza (1940–2017). The Annual Eunice De Souza Memorial Gold Medal and Award will recognise achievement in writing both within and outside of the classroom. Each year, the Eunice De Souza Memorial Gold Medal will be awarded at Convocation to a graduating student who excelled in English Literature courses during the B.A. LL.B. or B.B.A. LL.B. program and had outstanding future potential in academic or creative writing.

Speaking of the decision, Prof. (Dr.) Ashish Bharadwaj, Founding Dean, BITS Law School, said, “Eunice De Souza’s work reminds us that the way we write, read, and think shapes how we engage with justice. By instituting these two awards, we hope to build a tradition that values language, literature, and lived experience as essential to shaping the legal imagination. Legal education is not just a technical pursuit; it is also a humanistic one, and these awards reflect that belief.”  

The BITSLAW Writing Centre (BWC) will present the annual Eunice De Souza Memorial Award to a famous author whose work encompasses both creative and scholarly writing and explores legal, social, political, cultural, or aesthetic concerns. The awardee students will be invited to give a public talk on the BITS Law School campus.
