While disapproving the stand taken by the NLSIU authorities to not honour the wish of the Assembly which amended the NLSIU law three years ago to provide 25% exclusive quota to the locals in NLSIU, the Karnataka Law Minister JC Madhuswamy said in the Assembly that CJI Chandrachud is sympathetic to the state's demand.
Karnataka Law Minister JC Madhuswamy said in the Assembly on Tuesday that the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who heads the governing body at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), is sympathetic to the state's demand for a 25% quota in admissions for locals in NLSIU.
As per Economic Times, the minister has disapproved of the NLSIU's stand to not honour the 25% exclusive quota to the locals in NLSIU.
The Background
In March 2020, Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed a bill to give a 25% exclusive quota to the locals in NLSIU. As per this bill, candidates who have done their studies in Karnataka for 10 years will be eligible to apply for the 25% quota.
The university recently issued FAQs to answer the raised concerns regarding the admission of Karnataka students at NLSIU. "NLSIU reserves 25% of seats for Karnataka students on a horizontal basis. Since the year 2021, the University voluntarily adopted the 25% compartmentalised horizontal reservation for Karnataka students under the NLSIU Inclusion and Expansion Plan 2021-25. Prior to this, no Karnataka student reservation policy was in place at NLSIU between 1988 and 2020," said the university.
Recently, Karnataka Minister for Higher Education Dr CN Ashwath Narayan wrote a letter to the university and urged the law university to implement 25% domicile reservation with the exception of students selected under the All India quota.
