For all programmes, online applications commenced on 15 December 2025 and the last date for submission is 20 February 2026. Admission to LL.B. programme will be through a Computer-Based Test (CBT) conducted by IIT Kharagpur. RGSOIPL is inviting applications for LL.B. (Honours in Intellectual Property Law), LL.M. and the Master’s in Public Policy, Law and Governance (MPPLG) programmes.

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) has opened online applications for admission to its specialised law and public policy programmes for the 2026 academic session. The institute is inviting applications for LL.B. (Honours in Intellectual Property Law), LL.M., and the Master’s in Public Policy, Law and Governance (MPPLG) programmes.

The programmes are designed to offer interdisciplinary training at intersection of law, technology, governance, and public policy, aligning legal education with emerging technological and policy challenges.

IIT Kharagpur Law Programmes Offered by RGSOIPL

The law programmes are offered by the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL), established in 2006. RGSOIPL is the only law school within the IIT system with a dedicated focus on intellectual property and technology law, drawing upon IIT Kharagpur’s strengths in science, engineering, and innovation-driven research.

LL.B. (Honours in Intellectual Property Law): Eligibility and Admission Process

The three-year, full-time LL.B. (Honours) programme is aimed primarily at graduates from engineering, technology, science, medicine, and allied disciplines transition into legal practice with a focus on intellectual property and technology law.

Eligibility Criteria

  • First Class Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology, or Medicine, or equivalent
  • OR First Class Master’s degree in Science or Pharmacy, or equivalent
  • OR First Class MBA along with any of the above qualifications
  • Minimum 60% marks or CGPA 6.5 (if First Class is not explicitly awarded)
  • Final-year students can apply provisionally

Selection Process

Admission will be through a Computer-Based Test (CBT) assessing mathematics aptitude, science aptitude, English, logical reasoning, legal aptitude, and current affairs. The test will be conducted in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Kolkata, with no negative marking.

Application fee:

  • INR 3,000 for General/OBC male candidates
  • INR 1,500 for female, third gender, SC, ST, PwD, and EWS candidates
  • LL.M. Programme: Specialisations and Eligibility

RGSOIPL also offers a two-year LL.M. programme with specialisations in Intellectual Property Law, Criminal Law, and International Law.

Eligibility Criteria

  • First Class in 5-year LL.B./B.L. from a recognised university
  • OR First Class in 3-year LL.B./B.L. along with a Bachelor’s degree (minimum three years)
  • Final-year students are eligible to apply provisionally
  • Admission will be based on performance in a Computer-Based Test, conducted in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Kolkata.

Application fee:

  • INR 4,000 for General/OBC male candidates
  • INR 2,000 for female, third gender, SC, ST, PwD, and EWS candidates
  • MPPLG Programme Focuses on Policy, Law, and Governance

IIT Kharagpur has also opened admissions for the Master’s in Public Policy, Law and Governance (MPPLG), a two-year, full-time postgraduate programme offered by the Centre of Excellence in Public Policy, Law and Governance (CoEPPLG).

The programme prepares graduates for careers in government, policy think tanks, civil society organisations, industry, international institutions, and academia.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum four years) in Science, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Commerce, or Arts
  • Minimum 65% marks or CGPA 7.0 for General/OBC/EWS
  • Minimum 60% marks or CGPA 6.5 for SC/ST/PwD
  • Upper age limit: 30 years (General/OBC/EWS), 35 years (SC/ST/PwD) as on January 1, 2026
  • Age relaxation for working professionals as per norms
  • Preference for female candidates and those with relevant work experience

Selection Process

Admissions will be conducted in two stages:

  1. Computer-Based Written Test (English, quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, current affairs).
  2. Group discussion and personal interview for shortlisted candidates.

The entrance test will be held in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Kolkata.

Application fee:

INR 3,000 for General/OBC male candidates

INR 1,500 for female, third gender, SC, ST, PwD, and EWS candidates (non-refundable).

Commenting on the admissions announcement, Dipa Dube, Dean, RGSOIPL, IIT Kharagpur, said that legal and policy education must evolve alongside rapid technological and socio-economic change. She noted that the programmes aim to equip students with interdisciplinary knowledge and analytical depth for careers in law, governance, and public policy in India and globally.
