The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice P D Audikesavalu said that it is a big issue that needs to be addressed as it is damaging the image of lawyers and the credibility of lawyers need to be preserved.
The NDTV quoted the Chief Justice of the high court, "The judges do not come flying from Venus or Neptune. We come from a pool of lawyers. We are lawyers first and judges next."
This observation was made when a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition was being heard in the court. The PIL urged direction to the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to nominate sitting or retired judges as members of the disciplinary committees of the council instead of the current practice of nominating the other lawyers as the committees' judges.
Earlier the petitioner had requested the State Bar Council to take action against his advocate as the advocate allegedly colluded with the opposite party. However, once the council dismissed his complaint, he filed the PIL in the high court.
During the hearing, the Bar Council lawyer informed the court that they have found that out of the one lakh lawyers in the state only 67,000 were found to be entitled to practice.
The court has adjourned the case by four weeks and directed the central government and Bar Council to provide status reports on the issue.
