The government of India is likely to table a Bill in the Monsoon session of the Parliament.
The Ministry of Education is all set to accord Indian Institute of Management (IIM) status to the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai. A Bill in this regard is likely yo be tabled in the Monsoon session of Parliament, which is beginning today.
NITIE Mumbai, a prominent business school under the Ministry of Education is proposed to be included in the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Act, 2017. As per the Bill, NITIE Mumbai will be renamed IIM Mumbai.
The Modi Government has prepared the IIM (Amendment) Bill, 2022 and has listed it for the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Upon getting IIM status, IIM Mumbai will also enjoy Institute of National Importance status like other IIMs.
Earlier in January this year, the Education Ministry constituted a committee to deliberate on the feasibility to bring the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai, under the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Act, 2017.
The committee was headed by Bombay Stock Exchange's Chief Executive Officer and Allahabad University Chancellor Ashish Kumar Chauhan. Other members of the committee were Pramod Kumar Jain, Director at IIT BHU; Pawan Kumar Singh, Director at IIM Tiruchirappalli; Subhasis Choudhuri, Director at IIT, Bombay and Pradeep Goyal, CMD at Pradeep Metals.
At present, there are 20 IIMs in the country, which include names like IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, and IIM Ahmedabad, which was ranked as the top management school in the country in the NIRF Rankings 2022, announced last week.
