The decision comes in response to the case of a Dalit student who faced the prospect of losing his seat at IIT Dhanbad due to a late fee payment.

In a significant move, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced plans to register all Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), and other prestigious institutions with its Department of Social Welfare. This initiative aims to streamline scholarship disbursement for students in need, particularly in light of recent events involving delayed fee payments.

The decision comes in response to the case of a Dalit student who faced the prospect of losing his seat at IIT Dhanbad due to a late fee payment. The Supreme Court intervened, directing IIT Dhanbad to admit Atul Kumar, an 18-year-old Electrical Engineering student from Muzaffarnagar's Titora village, who narrowly missed the admission fee deadline of INR 17,500.

First Steps: IIT Dhanbad Registered

IIT Dhanbad has become the first institution to be officially registered with the Uttar Pradesh Department of Social Welfare. In a supportive gesture, the state government announced on Wednesday that it would cover Kumar's entire admission fee through a scholarship. This initiative aims to ensure that no deserving student is denied access to education due to financial constraints.

Expanding Support for Students

Social Welfare Minister Asim Arun emphasized the government's commitment to assisting students from Uttar Pradesh. "We will write to all such institutes of national importance, including IITs and IIMs located outside the state, for registration to enable seamless scholarship disbursement to all eligible candidates from the state who gain admission," he stated.

Collaborative Efforts for Scholarship Disbursement

Currently, three Uttar Pradesh government departments—Social Welfare, Backward Welfare, and Minorities Welfare—are involved in the scholarship distribution process. The Department of Social Welfare serves as the nodal department for all scholarship initiatives, responsible for formulating rules and guidelines.

This proactive approach by the Uttar Pradesh government marks a significant step towards ensuring that all students have equal access to educational opportunities, regardless of their financial situation.
