AIIMS MBBS: Nine seats remain vacant this year

AIIMS entrance exam was held on May 25 and May 26 and the result was declared on June 12. The counselling rounds were held till August 26.

Nine medical seats in the country's most prestigious medical institute, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), lie vacant this year. The admission process at the institute concluded on August 31. A total of 179 seats were advertised by AIIMS for open counseling this year of which only 170 were filled. The information came into light in an RTI query filed by an activist.

There were no vacant seats reported at the end of the counselling process on August 26. However, after the admission process concluded on August 31, nine seats - one each in Nagpur, Bathinda, and Raipur and two each in Patna, Deoghar, and Rae Bareli - were found vacant.

According to the activist, "AIIMS must make some arrangements to fill up these nine seats, which will remain vacant for the entire five-year academic session if enrollments are not allowed. It’ll be unfair if the deserving candidates are declined a seat for falling short by a mark or two, even if the seats go vacant.”

AIIMS conducts three rounds of MBBS counseling for admission. After the third round of counselling, it conducts an open round counseling for filling the seats that fall vacant by way of surrender or resignation. The updated list of vacant seats is released a day before the scheduled date for open round counseling. The open round counseling was held on August 26 this year.

AIIMS MBBS entrance exam is conducted to fill the medical seats at country's 15 AIIMS located at New Delhi, Bhubaneshwar (Odisha), Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Rishikesh (Uttarakhand), Patna (Bihar), Changsari (Assam), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Manglagiri (Andhra Pradesh), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Bathinda (Punjab), Deoghar (Jharkhand), Vijaypur (Jammu), Awantipora (Kashmir), and Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh).
