Dr MGR Medical University gives nod to NIS to start BSMS degree course

The National Institute of Siddha (NIS) has got the approval of Dr MGR Medical University to conduct a degree course in the Siddha system (BSMS) from this academic year onwards.

The National Institute of Siddha (NIS), located in Chennai, is a centre of excellence with research and higher education in the Siddha System of Medicine. It recently received approval from Tamil Nadu's Dr MGR Medical University to conduct a degree course in the Siddha system (BSMS) from this academic year onwards.

The NIS is still awaiting the nod from the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) under the Union Ministry of Ayush under which NIS is working. The senior officers from NIS have said that the process of getting permission from NCISM is progressing and the first batch of BSMS is expected to commence next month, as reported by Pharma Biz.

About National Institute of Siddha

NIS, the autonomous institute under the Union Ministry of Ayush is affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University in Chennai. It is the only Central government institution that runs academic courses in the Ayush stream Siddha in the country.

At present, the institute is conducting only post-graduate programmes in eight disciplines including Maruthuvam (Medicine), Gunapaatam (Pharmacology), Shirappu Maruthuvam (Special Medicine), Kulanthai Maruthuvam (Pediatrics), Noi Naadal (Pathology), Nanju Maruthuvam (Toxiclogy), Purai Maruthuvam (External Therapy), Varmam (Varma treatment) and Yoga Maruthuvam (Yoga), the institute is offering MD courses. Besides, the institute is conducting Ph D programmes.

Last week the Union Minister of Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the newly constructed three-storey building for the out-patient wing attached to the NIS. 

This month, the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras (IIT-M) and NIS have also signed MoU for the development of new collaborative teaching programmes and research in areas of clinical research, molecular biology and in-vitro cell line studies and health system research.
