The High Court has asked the principal secretary of the medical education department to appear before the court.

While hearing a contempt petition by a Bengaluru advocate over the delay in the operationalising of the premises of the Institute of Gastroenterology and Organ Transplant in Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, the High Court has asked the principal secretary of the medical education department to appear before the court.

The court has found the delay in the operationalising of the premises deliberate. Although the institute was made functional on July 5, 2021, it is not operational as the sanitisation work is pending. The sanitisation process requires a minimum of two months.

The court has questioned the authorities why the institute is not sanitised by now. The High Court bench said, "We fail to appreciate as to why the institute was not sanitised till date and why they are waiting for the court to allow them time to sanitise the institute. The conduct of the authorities concerned is highly deprecated."

Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) is a public college. It was started in 1955 by the Mysore Education Society. BMCRI offers a total of 51 medical courses including undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma medical programs. The most popular courses offered by the institute are MBBS ( Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) and MD (Doctor of Medicine). The institute also offers several fellowship programmes in vitreo retina, pediatric dermatology, cornea & external diseases of the eye, cosmetic dermatology, glaucoma, surgical gastroenterology, neurology, pediatric anesthesiology, dermatology accident trauma & emergency care, community ophthalmology, and surgery.

The accepted entrance exam is NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test).
