MD Program to Start with 20 Seats in 2025-26 Academic Year, MBBS on hold for now

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has got approval to start postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) program from National Medical Commission (NMC).

The program will initially begin with 20 seats in 2025-26 academic year. As per reports, the MD program will provide theoretical training at Dr. B.C. Roy Medical College, which has been recently upgraded with a Rs. 300 crore investment.

Practical training of students will take place at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Super-Speciality Hospital (SPMSH), located adjacent to the IIT KGP campus. SPMSH hospital started in-patient services and conducted its first surgery in August 2025, is now expanding to a 220-bed facility to support MD program and serve the campus community.

Earlier in 2023, IIT Kharagpur announced that will start offering MBBS course from 2024 academic session. In a statement institute stated that its MBBS programme will be somewhat different from the regular MBBS course as more technology will be incorporated into the syllabus. IIT Kharagpur planned to start with 100 MBBS seats, admitting students through National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) UG.

The MD program, approved by the NMC will have academic sessions at Dr. B.C. Roy Medical College with clinical exposure at SPMSH. Initially the course will have 20 seats, which will increase to 50 seats by 2027, depending on infrastructure assessments by the assessing bodies.

Interested candidates need to watch for application details on IIT Kharagpur’s official website (www.iitkgp.ac.in) (www.iitkgp.ac.in), which is expected to be released in early 2026.

Q:   How much time is provided to join allotted college after seat allocation?
A:

For every counselling round, reporting deadline is provided in the counselling schedule. Candidates can submit fees and report till the given deadline. Though candidates can report till last day, but they are advised to report before the deadline due to different schedule of holiday/working hours in various Medical Colleges/Institutes. Also they are advised to carry all original certificates and documents during reporting.

Q:   Can I get MBBS admission with a 300 score in NEET?
A:

It is possible to get admission to a private medical college with a score of 300 in NEET. For a government medical college, one should ideally obtain a score above 600. The NEET cutoff for the Government medical colleges varies as per the institute rank and round of counselling. Hence, it can be said that a score of 300 in NEET may not be sufficient for admission to Government medical colleges. As per past years' trends, a score between 500 to 700 or above is in the cutoff marks for NEET.
