The rotational headship in the Government Medical Colleges and Dental Colleges is expected to provide equal opportunities for professors in these institutions, allowing them to serve as Heads of Departments (HoDs) for a period of two years on a rotational basis.

J&K adopts rotational headship in GMC, Dental colleges

The Jammu and Kashmir Health and Medical Education Department has ordered the adoption of rotational headship in various departments of Government Medical Colleges and Government Dental Colleges of Jammu & Kashmir.

“Sanction is, hereby, accorded to the adoption of procedures for becoming the Head of Department (HoD) of any department in Government Medical Colleges and Government Dental Colleges of Jammu & Kashmir,” the H&ME Department said in an order, as reported by Rising Kashmir.

“In department(s) with multiple Professors, the post of HoD will be rotated amongst the Professors in every two years as per seniority,” the order added.

As per reports, the decision has been welcomed by professors in the government-run medical and dental colleges, as it offers a respite from the long-standing practice where faculty members, upon promotion to the position of professor, would hold the position of the HoD until their retirement.

J&K govt limits the tenure of HoDs to 2 years in GMCs and GDCs

The order titled Adoption of Rotational Headship in various departments of Government Medical Colleges and Government Dental Colleges of J&K was issued by Bhupinder Kumar, Secretary to J&K Government (H&ME) by “Order of Lieutenant Governor”.

As per the order, in the departments with only one professor, the current HoD will continue to be the HoD of that department. In other departments, where there is more than one professor, the post of the HoD will be rotated amongst the professors based on seniority, as reported by Greater Kashmir.
