J&K MP urges Centre to start MBBS classes at AIIMS Awantipora

Masoodi, J&K National Conference, Member of Parliament (MP) from Anantnag met Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and urged him to start MBBS classes at AIIMS Awantipora in the current session.

J&K Member of Parliament (MP) from National Conference, Masoodi has met Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and requested him to start MBBS classes at AIIMS Awantipora in the current session on the lines of MBBS classes that have been started at AIIMS Jammu.

As per the Greater Kashmir report, he suggested that MBBS classes for the current session in AIIMS Awantipora can be started at Islamic University of Science and Technology Campus Awantipora as it is spacious enough to accommodate MBBS students till the AIIMS Awantipora's construction work gets completed. 

He emphasised the need to expedite the project. Mansukh Mandaviya assured him that the matter would be accorded active consideration and necessary steps will be taken.

Last month Director Health Services Kashmir (DHSK), Dr Mushtaq Ahmad Rather also reviewed the construction work of AIIMS Awantipora, as reported by Brighter Kashmir.

Additional Chief Secretary Health and Medical Education, Vivek Bhardwaj had told Greater Kashmir that “This year, in the upcoming NEET UG, we are expecting to have approval for at least 50 seats for the AIIMS.”

AIIMS Awantipora expected to be completed by Jan 2025

"The AIIMS Kashmir is being constructed at 221 acres of land and the project cost is 1828 crores of rupees. We are trying to complete this project by January 2025. Once completed, this will benefit the entire Kashmir Valley. They will not have to travel to far-off places upon its completion. It will save their time," said General Manager, NCC, Mukesh Kumar, as reported by Devdiscourse.

AIIMS Awantipora's foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2019. For this upcoming AIIMS in Kashmir, INR 1828 crore was approved by the Central government. Between 2020and 2021, INR 211.16 crore and INR 1.50 crores funds were released for this under construction AIIMS in Kashmir.
