JIPMER holds 29th Convocation; BJP MLA causes flutter

During the 29th Convocation of JIPMER Puducherry, the director Rakesh Aggarwal awarded degrees to students and addressed the event. He said convocation relates to advise on how a fresh graduate must use the knowledge. During the event, BJP MLA, P M L Kalyanasundaram, questioned the choice of the person to distribute certificates to the students and alleged a breach of protocol.

The 29th Convocation of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) was held on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. On the occasion, Director Rakesh Aggarwal awarded degrees to students who completed their courses. 

While addressing the event, he said convocation relates to advise on how a fresh graduate must use the knowledge. "Hence, the concept of the convocation is not merely one of celebration - instead, the day is imbued with a deeper and more solemn meaning," he said, as reported by TOI.

During the convocation event, BJP MLA, P M L Kalyanasundaram got into an argument with the Pondicherry Central University Vice-Chancellor Gurmeet Singh as the Director of JIPMER was distributing the certificates to students.

He questioned him as to why territorial ministers and MPs who were present in the audience were not invited to hand over the certificates and alleged a breach of protocol.

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar was to be the chief guest at the 29th annual convocation of the university but he did not turn up. Subsequently, the university authorities had chosen Lt Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to preside as the chief guest but she also refused as she was preoccupied with some other work. Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy, who was expected to attend, also did not come, as reported by The Print.
