Karnataka state has requested an enhancement of approximately a minimum of 50 UG medical seats for each government medical college in order to increase seat intake equal to opening five new medical colleges in the state.

Medical Seats in Karnataka

The Karnataka Government has submitted a proposal to the National Medical Commission (NMC) seeking permission to increase undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats across the state. The government is seeking approval of the NMC to increase 800 MBBS and 700 PG medical seats across the state.

Dr Sharan Prakash Patil, Minister of Medical Education and Skill Development, notified that the request has been made to NMC due to the high demand for clinical courses.

An official from the Karnataka government informed the Daily that the majority of government medical colleges in the state have enough infrastructure and clinical training facilities, which makes them suitable for clinical seat expansion.

He further added that in earlier years, proposals were routinely made to increase only between 100 and 150 PG seats in a few established medical colleges.  However, with the exception of the newly founded government medical colleges in Chickballapur, Chikkamagaluru, Haveri, and Chitradurga, recommendations have been presented this year to raise seats in all other government medical institutions throughout the state.

He notified that approximately 50 undergraduate medical seats have been requested for the majority of the government medical colleges in the state. Without building new colleges, Karnataka might potentially receive seats equivalent to opening four to five medical colleges.

Further, the state has already notified 22 districts with government medical colleges under the Public-Private Partnership model. The state is also expecting to open cancer care centers and super speciality hospitals and trauma centres at places that cover at least two districts of the state.
