NMC has not issued any such notice to students with a limited time frame to obtain an eligibility certificate.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has termed a notice circulating on social media regarding foreign medical graduates as ‘fake’.

As per a notice circulating on social media, students who commenced studying in foreign medical institutions on or after 1/1/2019 need to get an eligibility certificate under Indian Medical Council Act by 31/12/2021. The medical education regulator has stated that it has not issued any such notice.

The fake notice issued on September 24, with subject ‘Urgency NMC Eligibility Registration Inform’ reads: “This is to inform all those concerned Indian citizens who commenced studying in foreign medical institutions on or after 01.01.2019 to register for Eligibility certificate under the Indian medical council Act,1956 at the National Medical Commission by the date 31.12.2021.”

The NMC has not issued any such notice to students with a limited time frame to obtain an eligibility certificate.

On the other hand, as per a notice issued by the NMC last year, the requirement of obtaining an Eligibility Certificate to pursue Primary Medical Qualification (MBBS or its equivalent) by an Indian Citizen/Overseas Citizen of India is mandatory in terms of section 13(4B) of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.

An Indian National/Overseas Citizen of India who desires to take admission into MBBS or its equivalent course in a Medical University/Institution outside the country is required to obtain an Eligibility Certificate from the Medical Council of India, New Delhi before leaving the country. It is not permissible for the holder of a primary medical qualification to appear in the Screening Test without obtaining an Eligibility Certificate from the Medical Council of India.

“Therefore, all the applicants who have taken and/or desire to take admission into MBBS or its equivalent course in a Medical University/Institution outside the country may apply for Eligibility Certificate to the Medical Council of India, New Delhi on the prescribed application Form No. 1 along with all relevant documents and fee,” reads the original NMC notification.
