Odisha govt agrees to operate Mahanadi Coalfields Limited’s medical college

The state government has agreed to the proposal of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited for managing the Mahanadi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (MIMSAR) in Talcher. The medical college would have 100 MBBS seats and the hospital would have 500 beds. The construction of MIMSAR was completed in 2018 and was unveiled by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in 2019.

As per the agreement, the Odisha government will run the medical college and hospital and MCL will provide the needed funds for running this college and hospital. Earlier, MCL tried to operate the MIMSAR through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik gave in-principle approval to run the medical college constructed by the MCL at the coal town Talcher in Angul district, as reported by Financial Express. “The medical college would further strengthen the efforts of the state government to improve the capacity of the medical education institutions in Odisha,” said the CMO's official statement.

Reportedly, after communication between Chief Minister and Coal Ministry, a proposal was sent to the state government for taking responsibility for operating the MIMSAR, and the government has approved it.
