A study was conducted to implement and evaluate online team based learning (TBL) among first year MBBS students in Biochemistry, and the technique was found to be useful for students.

Covid-19 pandemic has pushed the trend of virtual learning worldwide including in the medical education field. The efforts are being made to sustain students engagement in virtual learning. Recently, a study was conducted on team based learning (TBL) which is a learner-centered approach to increase student engagement.

The study was conducted to apply and assess the online TBL among first-year MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) students in Biochemistry.

As per IUBMB Journals, three online TBL sessions were planned on these students after getting informed consent. These three online TBL sessions were planned on liver function tests, regulation of gene expression, and nucleotide chemistry and metabolism. Also, the Individual Readiness Assessment Test, Group Readiness Assessment Test, and team application were assigned in Google classroom.

Reportedly, the students used online platforms for team interactions and after submitting the assignments, they joined the online discussions with the facilitator. Peer evaluation was conducted through Google forms and at the end of these sessions, participants feedback was collected.

The feedbacks reflect that the students found the process useful and it also helped in promoting team skills. The students perceived that online TBL is effective in promoting team skills, learning, and engagement.

A total of 150 first year MBBS students participated in this study, they were divided into 15 teams with 10 members each. An orientation session was also planned as the students were new to the TBL process.
