To strengthen the health infrastructure of the state by establishing new medical colleges under the Central scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated 11 new medical colleges and a Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT) in Tamil Nadu virtually from New Delhi.

While inaugurating the medical colleges, Prime Minister said, "Shortage of doctors had remained an issue for a very long time and the current government made it a priority to address this critical gap."

He also said that in 2014, the country had 387 medical colleges but in the last seven years only, the number has increased to 596, an increase of 54%. The medical undergraduate and postgraduate seats have also increased by 80% from 82000 medical seats in 2014 to 148000 seats now. In 2014, there were only seven AIIMS in the country, now there are 22 AIIMS in India.

Prime Minister Modi pointed out that by inaugurating 11 medical colleges in one go in Tamil Nadu, he, in a way, broke his own record when he recently inaugurated 9 medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. He expressed happiness that by establishing colleges in two aspirational districts of Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar along with one in the hilly district of the Nilgiris, the regional imbalance is being addressed, as stated by the PMO press release.
