Supreme Court restores Telangana’s four-year residence/study rule for MBBS, BDS state quota admissions, overturning High Court verdict. Supreme Court strikes down HC relaxation, upholds state’s domicile criteria. Medical aspirants must meet four-year local rule for MBBS, BDS seats in Telangana.

The Supreme Court has strike down HC relaxation, upholds state’s domicile criteria. The apex court has ruled that medical aspirants must meet four-year local rule for MBBS, BDS seats in Telangana.

The Supreme Court of India has upheld the Telangana government's domicile requirement for admissions under the local quota in MBBS and BDS courses in state medical colleges, thus making a significant change in medical admissions in the state.

A SC bench comprising Chief Justice of India, B. R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran today overturned a Telangana High Court verdict that had earlier diluted the criteria. The Telangana High Court ruling allowed candidates without four years of continuous study or residence in Telangana to claim local status, expanding eligibility under the state quota.

The apex court, however, restored the original rule, making it mandatory for students to have either studied continuously or resided in Telangana for at least four years to qualify as permanent residents eligible for local quota admissions.

The decision is expected to have a direct impact on thousands of medical aspirants seeking admission into government medical and dental colleges in Telangana.

The SC verdict brings clarity to the contentious issue ahead of the upcoming medical counselling rounds, ensuring that the state’s domicile rules will remain binding for MBBS and BDS admissions.
